Exceptional Children's Program

Art Lawrence grew up in sunny Tampa, Florida. After attending two years of college at the University of South Florida, he relocated to the mountains of Western North Carolina with his family in 1993.

He graduated magna cum laude with distinction in literature from the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) in 1998 with a B.A. in Literature (Creative Writing). While at UNCA, he was selected for two academic scholarships to study abroad at the University of Madrid in Spain and Oxford University in England.

Art earned his Special Education (K-12) certification through the NC TEACH licensure program and holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree specializing in learning disabilities. Before coming to The Mountain Community School, he was an 8th grade inclusion teacher at East McDowell Jr. High in Marion, NC. Art was the Special Education inclusion teacher at TMCS for the past three years.

He is currently the Exceptional Children’s Program Director for The Mountain Community School.
